Why do accidents happen on some roads more than others?

US Route 62 in Kentucky has more car accident fatalities per mile than any other road in the state, according to a recent traffic safety study conducted by Car Insurance Comparison that named the most dangerous highway in each state.

US Route 62 in Kentucky named the state’s most dangerous road

The recent Car Insurance Comparison study identified which road is the most dangerous each year. Researchers determined this based on the number of car accident fatalities on each road from 2019 through 2021.

During this period, 12 people on average each year died on US Route 62 in Kentucky, according to car accident data collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). US Route 62 travels 391 miles through numerous cities in Kentucky, including Paducah, Reidland, Calvert City, Eddyville, Princeton, Greenville, Central City, Leitchfield, Elizabethtown, Bardstown, Versailles, Georgetown, and Maysville, Kentucky.

What are other dangerous roads in Kentucky?

US Route 62 isn’t the only dangerous road in Kentucky. Four highways made their way onto the list of the 100 most dangerous roads in the country. The list created by ValuePenguin includes portions of four Kentucky highways based on the number of fatal car accidents per road:

  • US Route 60 in Fayette County, Kentucky (60th most dangerous highway in the country)
  • US Route 68 in Warren County, KY (84th on the list)
  • US Route 27 in Campbell County, KY (88th on the list)
  • Interstate 64 in Jefferson County, KY (97th on the list)

Why are some highways so dangerous?

It isn’t just a coincidence that some highways have more serious or fatal car accidents than others. According to traffic safety researchers at Car Insurance Comparison, dangerous highways often have four things in common:

  • More traffic than on most highways.
  • Outdated highway infrastructure, including potholes, missing guardrails, and confusing street signs.
  • Frequent hazardous weather. This can include snow, sleet, ice, freezing rain, hurricanes, tornados, and high winds.
  • Dangerous road features. These often involve steep inclines, sharp drop-offs, unexpected curves, and tunnels.
