Grayson County Mourns Death of Head-On Crash Victim

A Louisville car accident lawyer discusses the tragic crash

The community is mourning the death of a Grayson County woman who was killed in a head-on collision.

The wreck happened on a Tuesday afternoon in late August 2021 when a 47-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle, crossed the center line on Anneta Road in Louisville, and hit a Jeep Wrangler head-on, WDRB reports.

Kentucky State Police say the woman, who is from Clarkson, died at the scene. The person driving the Jeep, an 87-year-old woman, was transported to a hospital to receive treatment for injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

There are many studies into the causes and factors leading to head-on collisions — that's not the unknown aspect of the crash. What is less understood is why people lose control of their vehicles causing serious injuries and damage. This happens far more often than most people realize.

Car accidents with unknown causes

Almost 1 out of every 3 fatal car accidents are caused by unknown factors, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Often, the crash is attributed to the driver losing control of their vehicle. While there will always be some uncertainty, studies have noted behaviors that lead to loss of car control. These include:

  • Aggressive turning
  • Speeding
  • Sharp turns
  • Fatigue
  • Distracted driving (e.g., texting and driving)
  • Defective equipment
  • Bad weather
  • Tire blowouts
  • Hitting the brakes too hard
  • Hydroplaning
  • Vehicle type
  • Oversteering
  • Swerving to avoid a person, animal, or object

If the vehicle that loses control is a semi-truck or another type of big rig, the cause may also be overweight or improperly loaded cargo. When freight isn't secure it can slide around during transportation, throwing off a tractor-trailer's balance.
