Advocates Working To Decrease Louisville Pedestrian Accidents

In Louisville, More Should Be Done To Prevent Serious And Fatal Pedestrian Accidents.

Choosing to cross the street on foot shouldn’t be a life or death decision, yet Louisville pedestrians are being hit by cars at an alarming rate.

According to a recent article by WAVE, 806 people died in Kentucky car accidents last year, with 124 of those fatalities happening in Louisville. While that number represents all traffic crashes and not just pedestrian accidents, people on foot are disproportionately at risk. For example, in Louisville, 185 pedestrians have lost their lives on the streets since 2014.

Janet Heston, who suffered the loss of her son two years ago in a pedestrian accident, said she can’t stop thinking about the tragedy.

“You know my pain is indescribable, but Matthew is stuck with nevers,” Heston told WAVE. “He will never have a family. People who shared his same fate will never celebrate a holiday with their family again.”

What’s Being Done To Address This Crisis?

To reduce the number of pedestrian accidents and traffic fatalities in Louisville, Heston’s nonprofit, Matthew’s Bridge, is teaming up with Vision Zero Louisville and Taylor New Cut Network to get a bill passed that would put cameras on traffic lights throughout the city.

“These cameras have been proven to help reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries by reducing excessive speeding and red light running,” Vision Zero Louisville’s Transportation Planner and Program Manager Claire Yates said to WAVE.

Heston added that traffic cameras would help ease the burden on the police to hold reckless and negligent drivers accountable.

“We have speeding and crashes at crisis levels all over the city of Louisville, so we can’t just depend on these very few people to be able to monitor where streets are safe for everyone,” Heston said.

Many new projects are coming to Louisville, including revamping numerous local roadways for approximately $25 million. Still, it’s important to remember that it takes only one careless driver to cause a crash that seriously hurts you or someone you care about.

While increased safety measures and stricter penalties will help reduce the number of pedestrian accidents in Louisville, the reality is that there are still too many victims. If you or someone you love has been injured in a pedestrian accident, don’t hesitate to contact The Whaley Law Firm to discuss your legal rights and potential options for financial compensation.

Even if you’re careful, walking around Louisville can still be dangerous, thanks to speeders, red-light runners, distracted drivers, drunk drivers, and reckless drivers who fail to look out for pedestrians.
